  1. Before starting work it is necessary to look through the US NODC booklets attached to the CD-ROMs, which will be used by you: [WOA’94], [WOD'98], [WOD'98] (Version 1) or [WOA’98] (Version 2) . This will help you to formulate more correctly your requests for the data retrieval. For the subsequent sorting and processing the data chosen from the disks, you can use your DBMS or the applied programs.

  2. Copy all files or just the requested ones (considering Items 3,4) from our diskette (or directory [OCEAN.ZIP]) to your working directory, for instance, C:OCEAN. The names of these files are: Prof_all.xls; Atlas1g.exe; 1998wod.xls; 98-woa.xls, Gzip.bat; Gzip.pif; Gzip386.exe.

  3. Program Prof_all.xls will work with disks ¹ 4-9 CD-ROMs [WOA'94]. Program Atlas1g.exe (Russian version) will work with disks ¹ 1-3 CD-ROMs[WOA'94]. Program 1998wod.xls will work with CD-ROMs [WOD'98] of two versions - 1998 and 1999. Program 98-woa.xls - with the disks of Atlas [WOA’98], Version 1. These four programs are not related to each other and work independently.

  4. No one of the files enumerated in Item 2 is required for work of the Program Prof_all.xls, nor will they be extra. The same concerns the Program Atlas1g.exe.

  5. For work of the Program 1998wod.xls and Program 98-woa.xls it is obligatory to perform Item 2, i.e. to copy the requested files, except Prof_all.xls, Atlas1g.exe.

  6. If you want to work with the Program Atlas1g.exe (Russian version) which is inserted into your directory, i.e. with disks ¹ 1-3 CD-ROMs [WOA'94], you can run it right now, choose parameters and insert the requested disk. Note, that your "Mouse" isn’t helpful now, just the "Key-board". Window is shifted by “Tab”. Field selection is carried out with the help of the cursor. Keys “+” and “-” (Gray), as well as "PgUP" and "PgDn" (Gray) are used for changing the parameter values in the window. Assign the parameters and the path to the output file, where to the data will be dumpped off the disk, follow the helps. Further on - “Enter”. Quit – “F10”.

  7. If you want to work with the Program Prof_all.xls or 1998wod.xls you have to insert the compact disks and move /travel in the “windows”. Don’t confuse the disks of [WOA'94] and [WOD'98] series. In the 1-st window you choose the disk you will be working with while choosing the area. In the 2-nd one - the requested square of WMO. In the 3-rd window you assign the requested parameters of observations, give the time interval, precise the area inside the WMO square (if necessary) and open OUTPUT FILE (put in, for instance, C:OCEAN7616.txt, where the file name corresponds to the square’s number). To create the output file use the keys located on the screen right under the title "OUTPUT FILE" (for the Program 1998wod.xls), not by the windows located to the right.

  8. Program 98-woa.xls doesn’t require the explanations.

  9. While working with the Program Prof_all.xls you can make selection out of several 10-degree WMO squares simultaneously, and using the Program 1998wod.xls - just out of one square. Don’t forget that your "Hard disk" is not "sizeless". Upon fininshing the work with the Program 1998wod.xls, in the working catalogue it may appear the service files with the extension of NBD, BD, BIO, CTD, MBT, etc., depending on the type of the data you have retrieved. You should delete them. These designations are listed and desifered in the US NODC booklet attached to the disks. For them to be deleted automatically, see Item 10.2.

  10. Additional informatio for using the Program 1998wod.xls, and in case of any troubles:

  • Before running the Program 1998wod.xls it is necessary to precise the correspondence of the Files [Gzip.bat] and [Gzip.pif] to the disk where they are stored while addressing the properties of the File. If necessary - to insert the changes to the path: File-Properties-Program-Command Line.
  • Upon submission it appears the window “Setup” in which it is necessary to set the flag near “Initial” if it is used the “Earlier version” of the Atlas (1998), or next to “Version 2” for this CDs of 1999. Here it is possible to assign the needed extension for the output files, the possibility to preserve or to cancel the dis-archived files on the hard disk, to assign the choice of the station headers only or of the whole information (common process of the data retrieval with the automatic cancellation of the service files: to mark “Delete data sources files after work”).
  • In the next window it is chosen the ocean and the type of data.
  • Next window possesses the menu. Zoom gives the opportunity to decrease (Minus) or to increase (Plus) the size of the viewing on the screen.
  • To choose the area inside the 10-degree square in the window “Region” it is necessary to keep pressed the left button of the "Mouse" and “Ctrl”.
  • The marked area (mask) can be preserved up to the subsequent addressing it in the file with the extension *.wst, while pressing the button “To keep a pattern”. While pressing the button “To open a pattern” you can address to the earlier preserved area or to pass to the other window, while pressing “Cancel”. File *wst can be created by any text editor. It consists of 40 lines and 40 columns. "1" denotes the marked cell of the square, "0" - non-marked.
  • When it is necessary to retrieve the data for the particular time period, you should set the correspondent limits, while pressing the button “Time”.
  • Pressing the button “Select Sources” you pass to the next window, where it is carried out further choice of criteria for the data retrieval by placing the flag. Assign the type of observations and the measured parameters.
  • You can change the output file name while pressing the correspondent buttons in the window “Output Files”.
  • When quitting the Program you will be asked whether you want to preserve the performed installations for next work.

If it appears the error window, you should reload the Program for further work. To get the information about the errors you should address the reference system “Visual Basic” or to address the implementator. If there are any messages in the window - follow the instruction or please address our E-Mail: [rostov@pacificinfo.ru].
